In April I was lucky enough to join the Myers’ Orthopaedic Outreach trip to Lautoka Hospital in Fiji. The team included surgeons, anaesthetist, theatre nurse, sonographer and physiotherapists.
The physios provided therapy to patients after seeing the team in clinic, as well as in the outpatient physio department. We did this alongside the local physio team, providing education and advice on splinting, casting and exercises. Resources such as plastic, plaster and dressings were very low in the hospital so we relied heavily on the donations of medical supplies that were brought with the team.
This trip was an amazing learning experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed learning from the outreach team and local team in clinic and theatre. It was special to be involved in the whole patient journey and provided unique perspectives.
The trip made me feel very grateful for the continual education, training, support and resources that are readily available to me in Australia.
